ARCS Association of Residency Coordinators in Surgery BYLAWS

Article I - Name

Association of Residency Coordinators in Surgery (ARCS)

Article II - Purpose

The ARCS is an organization established as an educational resource to foster the exchange of ideas and provide information for persons in the position of surgery residency coordinator.

Article III - Membership

           The ARCS is a subgroup of the Association of Program Directors in Surgery (APDS). You must be an Associate Member of the APDS in order to be a member of the ARCS.

           Application for Associate membership requires the following:

1.  A letter of request, including a curriculum vitae

2.  A letter of support from your Program Director

Applications are reviewed and voted on by the Executive Committee of the APDS twice a year. New members will receive notification upon approval. At this time, the annual membership fee will be due.

Active members shall be privileged to attend all meetings of the APDS and the ARCS.

Article IV - Steering Committee

            The ARCS Steering Committee is comprised of a maximum of nine members.  Each member serves  four year term.  The officers are elected from the membership:

President – one-year term

President-elect – one-year

Secretary – Maximum two-year term

To be a member of the Steering Committee you must:

1.      be a member of ARCS  (refer to Article III)

2.      have attended at least three APDS/ARCS meetings

3.      have written support,  including financial support, by your program director

4.      be able to attend the Steering Committee meetings and any

additional called meetings

5.   be willing to host a planning meeting if elected president

Steering Committee members who are absent two consecutive meetings may be replaced by action of the President.

It shall be the responsibility of the President of the Steering Committee to

a) set the agenda for the fall planning meeting.
b) preside over the annual business meeting.
c) act as the liaison between the ARCS and the APDS.
d) advise Steering Committee members of current correspondence and ongoing changes.
e) be responsible for all correspondence related to planning and implementation of the ARCS.

It shall be the responsibility of the President-Elect to

a) assist the President in preparation for the planning meeting and the annual meeting.
b) assume the responsibility of the President the following year, or sooner should the position become vacant.

It shall be the responsibility of the Secretary to

a) act as a recording secretary at the fall planning meeting and the annual business meeting of the ARCS.
b) carry out such other duties as are assigned by the Steering Committee.

Article V - Meetings

There will be one meeting of the Association of Residency Coordinators in Surgery per year, held in conjunction with the annual spring meeting of the Association of Program Directors in Surgery. The place and date of this meeting shall be determined by the APDS. An annual business meeting will be held at this time. Items for discussion at the meeting should be submitted to the President at least six weeks prior to the business meeting.

Article VI - Dues

Dues and any assessments for the ARCS will be set by the APDS.
