most active program in New England over the past five years. Our congenital
heart program is based at the adjoining Boston Floating Hospital for Infants
and Children, a well-respected and freestanding pediatric hospital. In
addition, we have a growing thoracic and esophageal service. Virtually all
of our thoracic and esophageal resections are currently performed using
minimally invasive techniques. Our residents also rotate through the Lahey
Clinic Medical Center located fifteen miles away from the medical center.
Here the residents receive superb adult cardiac and thoracic training in a
community setting. Consequently our residents receive a wide exposure to
both academic and community-based practices during their twenty- four months
of training. During the thirty-year history of the program we have had the privilege of training residents from a wide variety of academic and cultural backgrounds. Three of our recent female graduates are thriving in successful thoracic and adult cardiac practices in the Northeast. Other recent graduates are practicing in either academic medical centers or in respected community hospitals. We are looking for qualified applicants who aspire to become busy and successful cardiothoracic surgeons in a challenging, yet extremely rewarding profession. We are currently recruiting for the residency position beginning in July of 2011. Fourth and fifth year general surgery residents are encouraged to apply using the ERAS (electronic resident application system). March 2010--Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA has received approval from the ACGME to initiate an integrated, five-year training program in vascular surgery. This program was developed to meet the needs of the trainee with a clear commitment to the field of vascular surgery. The curriculum features a solid core devoted to training in vascular surgery and medicine beginning in the first months of the residency. The balance of the curriculum focuses on multidisciplinary rotations in allied fields including general surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, cardiac and pulmonary diagnostics, trauma, and perioperative and outpatient care of the surgical patient. The goal of this curriculum is to prepare the graduate to take a leadership role in the coordinated care of the vascular surgery patient. New trainees will be accepted beginning in July, 2010. A current 4th-year medical student will be accepted to enter the program at the PGY-1 level and complete 5 years in the program. A current PGY-1 resident may enter at the PGY-2 level and complete 4 years in the program. Entry at either the PGY-1 or PGY-2 level will lead to eligibility for primary certification in vascular surgery.
Our vascular program offers a busy, tertiary care experience in vascular surgery. We perform roughly 2000 vascular surgery cases each year, with a broad spectrum of case types, including both open and endovascular surgery. The endovascular program functions as seamless collaboration with the interventional radiology service in dedicated radiology and surgical suites. The program includes peripheral arterial interventions, carotid artery stenting, abdominal and thoracic aortic endografts and endovenous procedures. The open surgical practice includes aortic surgery (both abdominal and thoraco-abdominal), infra-inguinal bypass, carotid endarterectomy and hemodialysis access surgery.
The Division of Vascular Surgery is part of the Allegheny Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, which has sponsored a well-respected two-year training program in thoracic surgery for over 40 years. Residents who train in the integrated vascular program will have the option of applying for a position in the thoracic surgery program with the goal of certification in both fields. Graduates of the two programs would be uniquely qualified to treat patients with a broad array of related conditions and to design new types of career paths to satisfy both their professional and personal goals.
