American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)

Concept of specialty board first proposed in 1908 by Dr. Vail in presidential address to American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology

In 1933 an advisory board was created by the then extant four boards, the AHA, AMA, FSMB, NBME, and AAMC

1948- establishment of the Liaison Committee for Specialty Boards (LCSB)

1970- ABMS formed
